Just inland from Unawatuna is YatagalaTemple, a quaint Buddhist temple built around and within giant boulder-like rock formations. The temple is believed to have established during the first kingdom of Sri Lanka. Secluded and majorly visited by locals, the temple looks out over lush paddy fields and small villages. Explore the calm environs of the Yatagala temple which once received the royal patronage. Inside the Image House of the temple is a reclining Buddha image, which is nine meters in length. The ceiling of the Image House is adorned with intricate paintings depicting significant events of the Buddha’s life and floral motifs from Kandyan era.
